HubbellGard® Fasteners
Hubbell Lighting has addressed a long-standing problem caused by the use of stainless steel fasteners in cast aluminum fixtures. This common and often specified practice can create a variety of unfavorable results. Galvanic or dissimilar material corrosion leads to paint blistering and cracking around the contact area. Unsightly “white dust” can be seen around the edges of the area next to be effected. After a period of time the screw starts to bond to the casting making removal for maintenance difficult or impossible.
The HubbellGard coating is applied over steel screws, typically 25% stronger than stainless steel, which prevents the aluminum from “sensing” the presence of the steel. The results are as follows:
- Prevents fastener corrosion which allows easy servicing and eliminates fastener "freeze-up".
- Resists over 70 corrosive agents commonly found in industrial, coastal, agricultural and commercial environments.
- Provides a hard surface that resists abrasion and scuffing typically encountered during fixture manufacturing and installation.
- Harder, stronger hardware for better seals and longer life; prevents screw heads breaking and allows easier service.
- Maintains fixture appearance by preventing "white dust", blistering, cracking and peeling paint finish.
- Maintains aiming of fixtures caused by corrosion induced drifting.
A superior product – HubbellGard fasteners - they out perform stainless steel when used with cast aluminum materials.
Wallpack Lighting Distributions
Wallpack distribution is generally determined by the lamp orientation. Whether compact, low wattage or full size 175-400 watt units, these typical distributions apply. Even refractor vs. shielded or cutoff units will follow the lamp position to output.
The key is vertical vs. horizontal lamp position. Vertical lamps provide access to the entire arc tube of the lamp to the sides and therefore can produce a wider lateral spread. This can be enhanced with prisms in refractor units or internal reflectors in shielded or cutoff units.
With horizontal positioned lamps, only the tip of the arc tube is seen on one side and the socket blocks light on the other. The result is shorter lateral spread but the capability of a greater forward throw of light.
The layout below shows typical distributions and their coverage. One cannot be said to be superior to the other until the lighting task is known. Then, by selecting the correct product, greater distribution utilization can be gained and a better lighting job will result.
The surrounding environment will direct the selection of refractor, shielded, cutoff or full cutoff units. The choice of polycarbonate fixtures or shields vs. glass may also be determine by the application location.

The Lektrocote® Finish Process
Hubbell and Spaulding have long been known for manufacturing lighting fixtures and poles which exhibit excellent exterior durability. Central to this success is our Lektrocote® paint and finishing process.
What makes a Lektrocote painted product superior? Our proprietary thermosetting, acid-functional polyester powder resin is electrostatically applied only after a thorough cleaning process. All contaminants and impurities are removed from the surface by one of two methods.
- Luminaires receive a five-step tank immersion process with both acid and alkaline based liquid cleaners followed by the deposit of a thin layer of a proprietary corrosion resistant compound to promote maximum corrosion resistance and paint adhesion. Finally the decorative finish coat is applied.
- Poles are cleaned and prepared by blasting the surface to a “white metal” state. Once free of all impurities, the surface is ready to accept an application of zinc-rich powder paint primer and/or the decorative finish coat.
Lektrocote® is our designation for those finishes which incorporate the paint and surface pre-treatment noted above.
Lektrocote® meets or exceeds the following standards:
- Exterior Durability - up to 5 years Florida exposure with 10% or less gloss reduction.
- ASTM B-117 - 1000 hour salt spray test
- ASTM D-2247 - 1000 hour humidity test
- ASTM D-2794 - Impact test resistant to 160 inch pounds
- ASTM D-522 - Flexibility test
- ASTM 3359B - Adhesion test

Star View Compliant
Hubbell Outdoor and Spaulding brands are aware of the growing concern over glare, light trespass and sky glow created by improperly applied lighting fixtures. This wasted light is wasted energy. To address this concern, we have designed many of our new products with Full Cutoff (zero uplight) optics to provide greater control of light output from area and wall mounted fixtures.
Hubbell Outdoor and Spaulding fixtures that meet Full Cutoff criteria are designated with the StarView logo. These fixture series or specific lens options will solve your need for excellent site lighting with an environmentally friendly reduced sky glow.
